This formed part of the maiden speech of Nancy Astor the first woman MP to sit in the House of Commons. It was delivered on 24th February 1924 on the topic of the restriction of alcohol during the Liquor Traffic Restrictions debate

It also has a 6 minute film about her impact and importance plus a general factual leaflet with an introduction to her career
Plus some digitised key documents on her contributions. they include letters, manuscripts and photos
Her full papers are held by the University of Reading. They have created an Astor100 feature which they are developing . It includes a 2019 presentation by Dr J. Turner Nancy Astor: First Steps Towards a Better Balanced World

On Shrove Tuesday we shared this post about Pancake day
BBC History magazine has a basic history to the traditions and why we eat pancakes
In 2017 a YouGov survey of 5,000 people found that the favourite topping was lemon and sugar
other polls on this topic included the percentage who know how to make a pancake from scratch!

Shrove Tuesday traditions.
To see manuscripts, music and song notes from traditional English folklore try searching the Vaughan Williams library and Full English resource. An example is this Pancake song collected in 1908 by Cecil Sharpe in Devon.

Pathe news reels has some marvellous short films of this including one from 1927 with the running women in aprons

The Story of the Gay Liberation Front in Britain new digital resource.

A fabulous new Google Arts and culture exhibition curated by staff at the LSE Library. It includes the original handwritten list of demands from 1970 plus great 1970s photos and images of documents. Topics covered include the membership and role of women in the GLF.


Fighting Disinformation Online: Building the Database of Web Tools

A new report from think tank Rand  describes the building of the database which has links to useful sources for researchers on detecting spam; codes; credibility scoring; disinformation tracking, verification  and education . Also released this week a report from Fullfact.org and Africa Check it includes information resources and an excellent report entitled: Media  and information literacy Lessons from interventions  around the world. It has three case studies from Uganda Argentina and the Uk on the role good teachers can play in teaching children to find real facts.

Belgica Periodicals website 

 Just released from the Belgian national Library digitised versions of 28 journals and periodicals published, from 1813 to the present day. There are some limitations on remote access according to title and dates after 1918. OCR allows full text searching . Subject coverage includes medicine, the arts and geography. One topic worth searching is Belgian empires and exploration.


Life expectancy of poor women is decreasing 
Shocking news this week from the Marmot review update which examined health equity in England. In its update  found inequality increasing over the last decade with   Life expectancy for poor women and in certain regions declining . This was in part attributed to austerity  measures.
The ONS has official bulletins which you can consult.  The Kings Fund site has a useful explainer of recent changes in life expectancy and how they compare with other nations. 

Air Force Museum New Zealand Military History Digital Archive

Over 5000 historic photos now free online from the official national  Air Force Museum of New Zealand . They cover earliest period of aviation to the end of 20th Century and include peace and wartime activities. There are special  albums on air bases and badges. copyright information is displayed on the website.

Finally brighten up your day remember the childhood classic books
Alongside images from the text of my favourite book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory complete with Dahl’s annotations and matchstick drawings on the original manuscript
All available in the fab British Library  Discovering Children’s Books new website
It has original content from the treasures of the British Library and other leading UK research libraries as well as author interviews, films of illustrators at work, supporting essays and teacher resources and online activities. Topics indclude fables ,fairy tales, illustrated books from medieval times to the present day. They include the original  manuscript of Alice in Wonderland
