WMO Atlas of Mortality and Economic Losses from Weather, Climate and Water Extremes (1970 – 2019

 

A rich source of data published recently by the World Meteorological Organization which gives overview of impacts from weather, climate and water extremes globally from 1970 to 2019 based on disaster data from the Emergency Events Database (EM-DAT). Fndings include ata  

 

there were more than 11 000 reported disasters attributed to these hazards globally, with just over 2 million deaths and US$ 3.64 trillion in losses. There are sections on the impact on developing countries 

 

only 7% of students turn to library staff for help with online learning 

one of the key findings from the Student digital experience insights survey 2020/21: UK higher education findings 

the survey involved 38,917 students from 41 UK universities The survey was conducted between October 2020 and April 2021. It records problems with access and attitudes towards online learning during lockdown. For more information on higher education new reports see the scoop.it page

Earth Observation Toolkit for Sustainable Cities and Human Settlements 

The Toolkit is the result of a collaborative effort between the Group on Earth Observations (GEO) Earth Observations for Sustainable Development Goals (EO4SDG) Initiative,  UN-Habitat and many other international collaborators, to advance the New Urban Agenda and Sustainable Development Goal 11 to “make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable.” 

Currently, the EO Toolkit hosts more than 25 urban related data sets, 10 interactive tools and 10 good practice use cases. A storymap has also been introduced 

 

 

The Modern Slavery and Human Rights Policy and Evidence Centre (the Modern Slavery PEC)  

a consortium of six academic organisations funded by the Art and Humanities Research Council and led by led by the Bingham Centre for the Rule of Law. Its website has news and research papers on issues relating to trafficking, the international supply chain and  modern slavery and the wellbeing of survivors

Cassyni : online academic seminars 

The Founders of Kopernio, Mendeley and Publons have just  launched Cassyni to run and publish academic seminars. It aims to enable  

Researchers to organize, host, run and publish their own seminars, and assign them with a DOI so they can be cited by the academic community you should also be able to join live or watch recordings of past seminars. Contributors currently include University of Oxford. Coverage of medical topics technology and science as well as some digital humanities. Register to watch and build up your own library  

 

 

Cleared for Takeoff: Explore Commercial Aviation  

Digital portal which forms part of the Digital Public library of America intends to cover the history of commercial flights in the USA. Currently includes Pan Am materials digitized from collections at the University of Miami, and Duke University alongside commercial aviation resources 

Includes sections for aircraft, airports, advertising and the history of flight attendants. Includes amazing photographs, videos, images and primary source documents . It also has a timeline of Pan Am.
