This week more on higher education and social mobility.

IFS has produced a wide ranging report covering which universities

facilitate the greatest social mobility. Outcomes are examined by different provider and subject area.

Using the longitudinal education outcomes (LEO) dataset it derives a mobility rate from the number of students who were eligible for free school meals on access and outcomes (mainly in terms of earnings) Findings included: many Russell Group universities were very selective and admitted fewer free school meals children but those who did graduate achieved greater success. Most successful areas were law computing and economics

HESA

Also released this weekGraduate earnings premiums in the UK

Which considers the question - How have changes in higher education participation and degree class awards impacted graduate earnings?

It argues that as the number of graduates in the workforce has increased the premium of extra wages they achieve over non graduates has fallen (from 17% for a 1970 birth cohort to 10% for 1990) and the class of degree has become more important.

A new Higher Education Policy Institute (HEPI) report

Hidden Voices: Graduate Perspectives on the Student Loan System in England - is based on interviews with a mix of pre-2012 regime graduates and more recent graduates . It shows concerns about the levels of debt finding  that graduates experience student loan debt as a burden, and that both the size of the debt and the way it can grow as interest accrues contribute to anxiety.
